What Are Dental Bone Grafts and Regeneration?

Why Might You Need A Dental Bone Graft?

Periodontal disease and infections can cause the jawbone to be lost. Teeth and dental implants need sufficient healthy bone support to ensure they last a long time.

Following advances in medical technology, in circumstances such as this, we are often now able to augment the patient’s own bone to provide a greater volume of bone support for the tooth/implant.

Similarly, when teeth are extracted, the patient often loses bone as a result. We offer the service of “socket-preservation” whereby we can simultaneously place bone substitute in the socket to reduce the amount of bone loss. This helps ensure there is as much bone support as possible for future treatments such as the placement of a dental implant to fill the gap.

Dental Bone Graft Healing Stages

01. Initial Healing (Weeks 1-2)

After the surgery, the gum tissue around the graft will heal. It may appear swollen and tender at first. It’s essential to follow post-operative care instructions, such as avoiding hard foods, to protect the area.

02. Integration Phase (Weeks 3-6)

The graft material starts integrating with the natural bone as cells gradually regenerate in the area. This phase is crucial for establishing a solid foundation, and regular follow-ups ensure the healing is progressing as expected.

03. Bone Regeneration (Months 2-6)

New bone tissue begins to form and replace the graft material, strengthening the jawbone. By this stage, patients typically experience little to no discomfort, and the site becomes more stable.

04. Long-Term Healing (Months 6-12)

The bone graft fully integrates, creating a dense and durable structure suitable for implants or other treatments. At this point, the grafted area is considered fully healed and ready for further dental procedures if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Dental Bone Grafts Necessary?

Dental bone grafts are often necessary when there is insufficient jawbone to support dental implants. They help rebuild bone structure, providing a stable foundation for implants and improving overall oral health.

What Is the Maximum Time To Wait Between Bone Graft And Dental Implant?

The maximum time to wait between a bone graft and a dental implant typically ranges from 3 to 6 months, depending on the extent of the graft and individual healing rates. In some cases, we may recommend waiting up to a year to ensure the graft has fully integrated with the natural bone. You can be rest assured that Dr Stern will advise you on the appropriate amount of time to wait for your particular case.

What Is The Aftercare After A Bone Graft?

Are There Certain Foods To Avoid After A Dental Bone Graft?
