What Happens At A Hygienist Appointment?

Step 1: Assessment And Advice

Your dental hygienist will examine your teeth and gums, checking for signs of plaque build-up, gum disease or other oral health concerns. They will also provide personalised advice on improving your daily oral hygiene routine.

Step 2: Dental Hygienist Scale And Polish

A thorough cleaning, known as a scale and polish, removes plaque, tartar and surface stains from your teeth. This helps prevent cavities, gum disease and bad breath, leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

Step 3: Aftercare And Prevention

Your hygienist will apply fluoride or other protective treatments if needed and give you tips on maintaining good oral hygiene at home. They may also recommend follow-up visits based on your oral health needs.

Dental Hygienist Testimonials

I'm pleased to have found Dr Simon Stern and his team at The Perio Centre. They are professional, friendly, and patient. You feel like you are part of their practice and are in safe, experienced hands. It's not great learning you have gum disease, and I wasn't an easy patient as I was so worried about what that meant in the long term. I had two periodontal scaling treatments (which were fine) from Dr. Stern with follow-up checkups. Now, I am seeing the dental hygienist Sam, who is friendly and helpful. Sam has played a big part in reassuring me that everything will be okay if I follow the guidance and that she can flag any concerns with Dr Stern. I recommend contacting Dr Stern's practice if you have gum or oral health concerns.
Thanks to Simon, Fran, Sam and Bea for getting me this far!

I came into the clinic with the biggest fear of dentists, and after my treatment by Simon and Sam (plus Sam's assistant) I have completely changed my view on dentists:
Not only they helped me a lot through a long term treatment for my gums, but they also took a bit of the trauma away, and I could never thank them enough for that.
Fran, the receptionist, also does a great job at making things easier and at being lovely.

What a stellar team, couldn't recommend this place enough!
Thank youuuu so much!!!

Sara

I can highly recommend the Perio Centre for anyone with periodontal disease. Dr Stern and his team carry out a detailed assessment and treatment plan. The team are professional and friendly and make you feel relaxed. Oral hygiene advice is very precise and specific and after many years of suffering gum disease it was the first time I had been properly shown how to brush my teeth and use interdental brushes. Dr Stern is committed to improving outcomes for patients with gum disease and frankly highlights its severity, consequences and implications for systemic disease. He also had a wholistic approach and provides psychological support which affects gum health. I am very pleased with my scores post treatment. Thanks!

Simon was terrific in his advice and client care as my first contact with the clinic. He recommended that I undertake a deep clean with the hygienist Sam and her assistant(s). She was absolutely first rate and I cannot recommend her enough. Her level of care and attention, during what can be quite an invasive procedure, was exceptional. Fran who managed the admin is also very accommodating and a delight to deal with.

Paul

I had a great experience with Simon and Sam on a treatment plan to sort some dental issues iI had been facing for a couple of months. I can see a great improvement in my dental health and have learnt a lot! The staff here are the best of the best including Fran who is super helpful with arranging appointments. Thanks all!

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Dental Hygienist?

A dental hygienist is a licensed healthcare professional specialising in the prevention and treatment of oral health issues. They clean teeth, check for gum disease and educate patients on proper oral care.

How Long Is A Hygienist Appointment?

A typical hygienist appointment lasts between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the complexity of the cleaning. Routine visits are usually shorter, while more in-depth treatments may take longer.

How Much Is A Hygienist Appointment?

The cost of a hygienist appointment at The Perio Centre is £250. We provide advanced hygiene services in a modern setting with state-of-the-art equipment.

Does The Hygienist Hurt?

Hygienist treatments are generally very comfortable. Patients with heavy plaque build-up may have mild discomfort, however our experienced hygienist can adjust pressure to ensure your comfort throughout the appointment.

What Is The Difference Between A Dental Hygienist And A Dentist?

While both are dental professionals, a dentist diagnoses and treats dental issues, while a hygienist focuses on preventative care, including cleanings and oral health support. Dentists can perform surgeries and complex treatments, while hygienists focus on routine maintenance.

How Often Should You See A Dental Hygienist?

It is recommended to visit a dental hygienist every 6 to 12 months for routine cleanings and maintenance. However, individuals with gum disease or specific oral health concerns may require more frequent visits.

Do You Offer Same Day Appointments?

Yes, it may be possible to get a same day appointment, ensuring you get the professional care you need without the long wait. Get in touch today and we will arrange a convenient time for your visit!

How Long After The Hygienist Can You Eat?

You can typically eat immediately after a hygienist appointment. It is best to wait for 30 minutes to 1 hour if fluoride treatment was applied. This ensures the treatment has time to set and offers optimal protection for your teeth.

Is It Normal To Get Tooth Sensitivity After The Hygienist?

Some mild tooth sensitivity is possible after a hygienist appointment, especially if you have heavy plaque build-up. This usually resolves within a few hours, but if discomfort persists, consult your hygienist for advice.

Will My Appointment Be Covered By Insurance?

Coverage for hygienist appointments depends on your insurance plan. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm whether the cost of the appointment is included under your dental benefits.

Let us give you something to smile about.
